Proponents developing major projects in Australia need to comply with a variety of regulatory compliance and approval requirements. The level of complexity associated with these requirements depends upon the nature of the project, and may require approvals across multiple levels of government. The Australian Government recognises the significant costs incurred by proponents seeking to clarify their projects regulatory approval pathway, and is committed to reducing this burden.
The Major Projects Approval Agency is an Australian Government initiative to provide a ‘single point of entry’ into the Australian Government for proponents of major investment and developments in the Northern Territory and Tasmania. The Agency ensures that approval requirements are clear and understandable, and works closely with Commonwealth regulators, and the Northern Territory and Tasmanian Governments, to identifying all regulatory approval obligations. Agency offices are located in Launceston, Tasmania (since 1 July 2014) and Darwin, Northern Territory (from January 2016).
The Agency’s assistance to major projects is part of the Australian Government’s commitment to the development of Northern Australia, and is a key part of the Government’s Economic Growth Plan for Tasmania. All services are free of charge for eligible projects and carry no obligations for proponents. Please see our services section for more information, or contact us to discuss your eligibility and your projects regulatory approval requirements.
